The grass roof of the cafeteria which is made of the Mexican stonecrop is a part of an energy conservation solution that reduces the direct summer sun light getting inside the cafeteria, and also preventing heat reflection to affect the neighboring research building. It provides greenery year-round for visitors to the factory or nearby residents that fulfills a role of consideration to and harmony with the local environment.

Shiga factory built in consideration of the local environment

The Shiga Factory is located on the “Lake Biwa Eastern Core Industrial Estate” near the Taga-taisha shrine on the shores of Lake Biwa, the biggest lake in Japan. Operations began in 2010, and the fatctory meets the strict local environmental regulation because of the lake nearby. As one consideration, an illuminated facility on the premises uses lowered lighting to prevent interference with star gazing at the nearby observatory.
